30 Years Church of Saint Barbara in Bärnbach
2018-09-04

A church shall be beautiful, one should like to go inside,
should feel at home inside. One should find in it a bridge to God,
to nature and to creation.

Hundertwasser, 1987

The church was redesigned and renovated after the plans of Hundertwasser and the consecration of the church took place on September 4, 1988.

For the first time the ideas of this artist defined the appearance of a house of God. The symbols on the façade – the cross, lamb, dove, pelican, fish, goblet, bread, tree, ship, Christ’s monogramme, heart, anchor, alpha and omega – point to secrets which reveal themselves to the faithful and knowledgeable viewer. The gold of the tower pointing “on high” is indicative of the eternal. The entire building is designed to make the person entering it look “within himself”.
